A Travel Guide to Kelowna, BC

In 2017, Scott befriended a Pilot at work, from Kelowna, who warmly hosted our family. Our new Canadian friends amazed us with their kindness, graciousness, and attentiveness. Their unexpected hospitality, cooking, and interaction with our kids made it an unforgettable experience. We had such a good time that we changed our route to visit them on our way back from Alaska.

Where to Stay in Kelowna, BC

Our recent Alaska/Canadian adventure concluded in Kelowna. We parked our fifth wheel at our friend’s house, considering Bear Creek Provincial Park Campground as an alternative if it didn’t work out. For those seeking a hotel, we walked by The Cove Lakeside Resort, and it caught our eye with its beautiful grounds, right on the water. We prefer West Kelowna because it is less busy, but still has a lot to offer.

Favorite Things To Do Around Kelowna, BC

We had more time to explore back in 2017 when our kids were younger. We rented a boat to explore the beautiful Okanagan Lake. Our kids also learned how to paddle board and skip rocks in the Okanagan, thanks to our gracious hosts.

One of our favorite activities in Kelowna, BC was biking the The Kettle Valley Rail Trail. We had such a great time, the kids loved it!

During our stay, we ventured to Peachland, a charming town nearby. Our kids enjoyed scooter rides and even swung on a rope swing into the water! The town features a small beach where you can unwind, observe ducks, and enjoy a leisurely picnic.

Kelowna is known for its wineries. While we were there in 2017, we visited the popular Mission Hill Winery. The grounds were so beautiful with a picturesque view of the lake.

On our most recent visit, we hiked Glen Canyon in West Kelowna. The trail was so peaceful with a creek running through. While the trail was simple, be prepared for numerous stairs along the way.

The trail led us to Truck 59 Cider House. If you don’t partake in alcoholic beverages, they offer tasty sodas flavored with fruit (with no added sugar) that you can sip while playing the ring game, corn hole, or just simply relax on the spacious patio and take in the serene views.

Kelowna is a gorgeous destination in British Columbia, Canada. It is a little gem that is often overlooked. Kelowna is referred to as “Kelownafornia” by locals due to its gentle climate. I was a little saddened to see how much this place had grown over the past six years, but I can see why, with its mild climate, wineries, pristine lake, and the friendliest people.

Bible Verse of the Day

2 Peter 3:9

The LORD is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.

Reflection

  • In 2017, we were supposed to fly from San Diego to Kelowna for our ten day vacation. We ended up missing our flight, not realizing that you had to check in two hours early for international flights. I was so upset, but it was all a part of God’s plan. We ended up taking our new minivan (which we swore we would never have) and roadtripping all the way to Kelowna from San Diego.

  • God was not only blessing us with more time together that we desperately needed this season of our lives, but He also put the travel bug in our hearts. He was preparing us in such a simple way for this nomadic lifestyle that led to a deeper relationship with Him. I'm so grateful for God's vision and provision for my life and His patience that allows me to struggle and grow in order to be ready for His will.

Every time Scott is patient with me and rubs my shoulders or whenever my kids offer me a hug “just because,” I know that it's God showing His love to me through the people He has given me. I praise God for His patience, love, and provision!

I pray that we will all come to know God as He is: patient, kind, all knowing, and intensely loving. May we all give our will over to His perfect will so that He can transform our lives in such a way that points others toward Him. I pray that we will all offer others the patience that God offers us in order to love them more completely.
