New Mexico: Dunes and Caverns

We used to think of New Mexico as just another desert to pass through—coming from a desert background, it felt like more of the same. But I was so wrong. Spending real time in the “Land of Enchantment” opened our eyes to its stunning cliffs, rich Native American history, star-filled skies, and breathtaking sunsets. Interestingly, many East Coast full-timers we’ve met absolutely adore New Mexico.

Join me as I share why New Mexico is worth a closer look!

Start your visit to White Sands National Park at the visitor center for sled rentals, wax, maps, and facilities. Driving in feels like entering a snowy wonderland as the sand mimics snow. Despite the crowds, we found peace by hiking to the dunes at the loop’s end—a stunning escape into another world.

Sledding down the dunes was an absolute thrill, surpassing the speed at Monahans Sandhills State Park—perhaps a testament to the impact of wax.

Trust me, get the wax!

Our White Sands photos are some of our best, making it a standout destination. If you’re nearby, don’t miss it—it’s truly bucket-list worthy!

Our Accommodation: White Sands Missile Range

Staying on military installations, like White Sands Missile Range, saved us money and provided a reliable backup during peak seasons, like winter in Florida.

For just $15 a night, the base offered eight full-hookup sites and $10 electric-only overflow spots. Clean, level, and near a park, the sites included laundry and restrooms for a comfortable stay.

Visit the White Sands Missile Range, open to the public Monday through Saturday, 9 AM–4 PM, for free!

Bring your Real ID for a visitor’s pass and enjoy a short five-minute walk to the museum.

Our time at the museum was thoroughly enjoyable, resulting in some fantastic photo opportunities.

Detour: Roswell

On the way to our next stop, our daughter begged us to swing by Roswell. Looking back, it wasn’t the best idea. Navigating narrow streets with low-hanging trees and wires was nerve-wracking, especially as road trip rookies.

The town’s kitschy alien vibe wasn’t really our thing, but if it’s yours, I’d love to hear your thoughts!

Final Stop: Carlsbad

No trip to New Mexico is complete without visiting Carlsbad Caverns. Unlike Kartchner Caverns, Carlsbad is massive and draws more tourists, but the breathtaking scale and beauty make it an unforgettable experience.

We chose to hike the two-hour cave trail instead of taking the elevator. With photography allowed, we snapped some amazing shots.

Exploring caves quickly became one of my husband’s favorite road trip experiences.

Tip: Don't forget to bring a flashlight for your cavern journey.

Where to Stay

We chose boon-docking at Chosa in a free dirt lot. Despite the crowds, it felt secure, with the bonus of a dumpster. The night skies were stunning, free from light pollution.

Where to Eat

Consider making a pitstop at Lucky Bull Bar and Grill; don't miss out on the chance to savor their delectable Poutine Fries!

Overall Experience

  • New Mexico marked several firsts for us—our first stay on a military base, our first experience with boon-docking, and a deeper exploration of this beautiful state. On a quiet walk, Scott and I marveled at God’s goodness, as He fulfilled my heart’s desires: adventure, connection, and family.

  • Trusting God wasn’t easy. It meant letting go of everything familiar—possessions, security, even close relationships. But I discovered that surrendering it all brings a peace, excitement, and fulfillment far greater than trying to control everything on my own.

  • Seek God, align your desires with His, and watch the extraordinary journey unfold!

Philippians 2:13 (AMPC)

13 [Not in your own strength] for it is God Who is all the while effectually at work in you [energizing and creating in you the power and desire], both to will and to work for His good pleasure and satisfaction and delight.

Reflection

  • “God helps those who help themselves” is a misconception. God helps the helpless and empowers the weak because of His love, not our efforts.

  • When we surrender to Christ, He works in us, fulfilling our desires and bringing us closer to Him.

  • True work is cultivating our relationship with God—through prayer, Bible study, worship, and sharing His light.

  • Goals are good when they glorify God, but don’t let anxiety or stress take over. Trust God; He’s in control.

  • In a world that prioritizes success, we must slow down, connect with God, and focus on what truly matters.

  • Trust in God’s provision. Shift your priorities to His will, and He will guide your path.

  • We are vessels for the Holy Spirit, living by faith in the Son of God, as Galatians 2:20 says: “I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me.”

Prayer

Heavenly Father,

I seek Your guidance and provision, trusting in Your perfect plan. May I find joy in delighting in You, knowing that, in doing so, You will fulfill the desires of my heart. Let Your will be my priority, and grant me the faith to lean on Your unwavering promises.

In Jesus’ name Amen.
