Alabama: Lake Life in Dadeville

We adore Alabama's Gulf Coast, but we were curious about what the rest of the state had to offer. Our first inland adventure took us to Dadeville, a charming lake town.

Join us, a full-time traveling family in our fifth wheel, as we explore the serene beauty and friendly charm of Dadeville!

Maxwell Air Force Base Fam Camp

Maxwell/Gunter Air Force Base Fam Camp might look like it needs a lot of TLC, but sometimes those are the best finds.

We scored a spacious spot right on the water with our own private dock for dirt cheap—a rarity! Despite being one of the most uneven spots we've parked in, the stunning views made it all worthwhile.

The bathrooms were out of order, but being self-contained campers, it didn’t bother us. What stood out most was the community spirit. Regulars, who clearly cherish this place as their retreat, have taken it upon themselves to maintain the sites.

Although a tornado hit the area about a decade ago, the resilience and dedication of these campers were evident. Their friendly, welcoming nature made our stay all the more enjoyable.

Lake Martin

The campground backed up to Lake Martin. The lake is huge and stunning. Our neighbors were so welcoming that they took Scott and my son fishing on their boat early in the morning.

That afternoon, they invited the whole family out on their pontoon boat, where we enjoyed the breeze, the views, and saw the stunning homes along the shore.

Food

This area may be small, but it is charming. Lake Martin Pizza was excellent and had outdoor seating.

For our grocery needs, we stopped by 34 Market. This quaint little store had all the essentials and more, perfect for our cozy kitchen on wheels.

Tornado Tales

Our stay took an unexpected turn when the camp host informed us about a tornado warning. He unlocked the unused bathrooms for shelter, but his warning to “be careful in there” was enough to make us rethink our plans. I quickly told Scott to pack up—we were heading north!

In record time, we hit the road and found a safe haven at a nearby Harvest Host.

Overall Experience

We still talk about our time at Lake Martin. It was a beautiful experience in the interior of Alabama… minus the tornado. The people were so friendly.

Southern hospitality is a real thing, y’all. We shared two boat rides, a campfire, and friendship.

Lake Martin was an early stop on our journey, and during a challenging time in the pandemic, it reminded us of God's goodness through the kindness of people we met.

We saw true selflessness, kindness, an eagerness to help, and got a taste of the good, simple life. We fell in love with the water, pine trees, charm, and people.

Romans 11:3-4 (NASB)

"Lord, they have killed Your prophets, they have torn down Your altars, and I alone am left, and they are seeking my life.” But what is the divine response to him? “I have kept for Myself seven thousand men who have not bowed the knee to Baal."

Context

  • Paul is referring to 1 Kings 19:10 and 19:18. In these verses, Elijah felt weary and lonely, thinking he was the only faithful servant left. However, God reassures Elijah that there are 7,000 people who are also faithful.

  • Paul uses Elijah’s story to show that God has not abandoned Israel. Despite how things might seem, God has preserved a faithful remnant. This confirms God’s sovereignty and grace.

Reflection

I chose this verse today because sometimes the world feels really dark and lonely. I often wonder if there is still integrity, kindness, faithfulness, and a true desire to follow Jesus out there.

But just as God reminded Elijah, Israel, and the early church, He reminds me that I am not alone by bringing people into my life. We have experienced such kindness from people across this country, especially in states that seem so far away from the familiar.

Sometimes we just need that reminder.

Albert Schweitzer: "At times our own light goes out and is rekindled by a spark from another person. Each of us has cause to think with deep gratitude of those who have lighted the flame within us."

Prayer

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for bringing people into my life to remind me that I am not alone in serving You. Help me to recognize when You place these people in my life and to be that person for someone else. I am grateful for Your sovereignty, grace, and kindness toward me.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.
