New Hampshire: Boiling Lobsters and Chasing Sunset

New Hampshire, one of New England’s six states, greeted us with breathtaking landscapes, rich history, and undeniable charm. Known as the “Live Free or Die” state, it embodies a spirit of independence—and the added perk of no state sales tax!

Journey with us as we explore what makes this destination so unforgettable!

Sea Coast RV Resort

Our home base was the Sea Coast RV Resort, where RaeMa and Pop were our friendly neighbors. This private campground stood out for its immaculate bathrooms and convenient laundry facilities. While on-site activities were limited, the location was unbeatable.

Nestled near stunning beaches and a short drive from both Portsmouth and Massachusetts, it was the perfect launchpad for our adventures.

A Lobster Boil to Remember

Our first lobster boil was a mix of excitement, humor, and a tiny dash of panic. Tossing a live lobster into boiling water is not for the faint of heart!

We purchased our fresh lobsters from Yankee Fisherman’s Co-op, thanks to a great tip from a local.

Scott, determined to get it right, sought advice at his meeting. A nearby New Englander couldn’t help but laugh and said in full accent, “Look at this guy from California, learning to boil lobstahs from a corn guy from Iowa!”

As it turns out, the Iowa corn guy knew his stuff, and dinner was an absolute success.

Hampton Beach: Sunsets and Surprises

Our daily tradition of five-mile walks found a stunning backdrop along North Hampton and Hampton Beaches. The crisp air and crashing waves were invigorating, and the sunsets? Absolutely breathtaking.

While exploring, I decided to “plan” for fireworks I’d read about at Hampton Beach. So, chairs, blankets, and excitement in tow, we headed to the beach—only to find ourselves sitting alone in the dark. Why? Fireworks were canceled for the nesting of endangered piping plovers.

Lesson learned: maybe spontaneity is my strength after all!

Portsmouth: Where History and Charm Meet

Portsmouth, with roots dating back to 1623, is a town that blends colonial history with modern vibrancy. Its Federal-style architecture and walkable streets invite exploration, and just across the Piscataqua River, you can pop over to Kittery, Maine.

One of my favorite stops was the Strawbery Banke Museum, a living history experience where costumed interpreters brought centuries of Portsmouth to life. Another favorite was Prescott Park, a serene waterfront haven with gardens perfect for a relaxing stroll.

A Day in Gloucester, MA

On a whim, we ventured to Gloucester, Massachusetts—a picturesque fishing village steeped in maritime history. Wandering its streets felt like stepping back in time.

Lunch at SeaPort Grille, suggested by the kind ladies at the visitor center, was a highlight. The fish tacos? Unforgettable. Gloucester’s laid-back vibe and stunning views made this day trip one to remember.

Overall Experience

New Hampshire won my heart with its coastal beauty and laid-back atmosphere. Each walk along the rugged shore filled me with both energy and peace.

The crashing waves and endless horizon are a reminder of God’s infinite power, while the steadfast cliffs speak of His unwavering presence in life’s storms.

The evidence of harsh winters in the rugged terrain left me in awe of the people who endure them—and the reward of vibrant summers that follow.

Experiencing true seasons for the first time has been a blessing, a reflection of life’s rhythm of challenge and renewal (remind me of this as we winter in Indiana).

Matthew 8:27

“The men were amazed and asked ‘ What kind of man is this? Even the winds and waves obey him!”

Context

In Matthew 8:23-27the disciples find themselves in a storm, panicked and fearful, while Jesus sleeps peacefully. When they wake Him, He rebukes their lack of faith and calms the storm with just a word.

Their awe at His authority over nature reminds us that the same God who commands the waves also carries us through life’s storms.

Reflection

As we face our own challenges, we can draw strength from knowing Jesus is sovereign over all things. When fear rises, we can CHOOSE faith, resting in His power and peace.

"Feed your fears, and your faith will starve. Feed your faith, and your fears will starve."- Max Lucado

Prayer

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for being our refuge in life’s storms. Help us to trust in Your sovereignty and replace fear with faith. May we stand in awe of Your power and find peace in Your presence.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.
