New England has a beauty that feels almost unreal with its fall colors that burst with energy, while spring brings a lush, refreshing green. Experiencing it all from our fifth wheel has made these moments unforgettable! Rhode Island, in particular, has always captivated me, so finally visiting and then returning was a thrill.
My first visit to Rhode Island was in the fall, and I was instantly smitten. We parked our fifth wheel at Carr Point Fam Camp, a small, open stretch of grassy coastline with water and electric hookups—and natural ocean views that took our breath away.
We met up with RaeMa and Pop at Midtown Oyster Bar for some classic Rhode Island lobster rolls. My daughter tried octopus for the first time—and loved it! I love seeing her adventurous spirit in action.
This was hands-down my favorite Rhode Island experience. The Cliff Walk follows the coastline, offering stunning ocean views and glimpses of grand mansions.
We braved five miles of sandy trails under the hot sun at East Beach. Midway, we met a family whose truck was completely stuck in the sand. All we could do was offer water while they waited for a tow. By the time we walked back, they were on the beach, enjoying themselves—crisis averted!
After that sandy trek, a stop at Dave’s Coffee in Charlestown was exactly what we needed. The coffee was delicious, the pastries were perfection (don’t miss the potato scone!), and the atmosphere was so welcoming.
Rhode Island, with its mix of family time, friends, and memorable moments, totally stole my heart. Looking back, even the fiasco with our dog Peter makes me laugh. In the moment, it was pure chaos, but by morning, we couldn’t stop laughing.

This spot might be simple, but it turned into something unforgettable, thanks to the friends we met from Alaska. If it weren’t for them, we’d have never had our Alaska adventure! Our new friends, who once called Rhode Island home, shared local tips that gave us a whole new way to explore the area.
First off, Rhode Island weather is full of surprises. One night, we went out to explore a bookstore, and while we were gone, a wild lightning storm hit. Our dog, Peter, is terrified of lightning, so we knew we’d come home to chaos.
Somehow, Peter managed to climb onto my daughter’s top bunk, pee all over her bed, knock our electric heater onto the rug, and chew on my son’s Bible. Naturally, my son declared him “possessed,” but Scott insisted Peter was just “hungry for the Word.”
To clean up the mayhem, we put Peter outside in his crate under the awning. But little did we know, a skunk had already made itself at home there! Peter bolted, ran straight for the water, and eventually made his way back—now reeking of skunk.
With no choice but to make him sleep outside, we woke up to a stinky mission: a vinegar, Dawn, and baking soda bath. Miraculously, it worked!
If you’re in Rhode Island in the fall, do yourself a favor and take a drive down Scenic Route 102 through Blackstone River Valley. The colors and landscapes are simply breathtaking—we’d never seen anything like it!
We spent a day hiking the beach trails here, logging five miles in this charming beach town. Watch Hill has everything: shops, baked goods, and a beautiful lighthouse that gives you that classic New England vibe.
The Naval War College Museum was a fascinating stop. Located in the original home of the Naval War College (founded in 1884), this place is packed with history—think Revolutionary War artifacts, WWII memorabilia, and an impressive collection of ship models and battle maps.

If you’re into military history or maritime studies, this museum is a must-see.
Just remember to get permission in advance since it’s on an active base!

It’s mostly an easy walk, though there are a few fun challenges, like a dark tunnel and some rocky sections. If you’re visiting Rhode Island, don’t miss it!

Scott, who once would’ve let an ordeal like that really get to him, stayed calm, rolled up his sleeves, and simply tackled the mess. He’s fond of saying, “Don’t react to the problem—act on the problem.” His journey with sobriety has truly changed how we handle these “adventures”!

Ecclesiastes 7:9
“Do not be quickly provoked in your spirit, for anger resides in the lap of fools.”
Context
King Solomon, known for his wisdom, cautions against unchecked emotions, warning that quick anger leads us from wisdom into foolishness.
Reflection
- Patience and self-control are two fruits of the Spirit, yet reacting impulsively can yield the “fruit” of foolishness. I strive to show both patience and self-control, though I find them challenging—not so much in moments of anger, but in other areas of life.
- Patience is hardest for me in those “in-between” seasons of waiting; impatience can sour my attitude or push me to act out of my own will rather than God’s.
- Self-control is especially tough with food and exercise—two areas where I’m learning to surrender more to God.
Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Thank you for all the experiences and people we have met on our journey. Help us to respond with patience and self-control, especially in moments of waiting or temptation. Teach us to trust Your timing and guidance, and may Your Spirit lead us to act with wisdom, not impulse.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
